Owning a business represents experiencing personal and professional growth that may not necessarily be achieved by working for another company.
This is the belief of CEO Kevin González , COO Eduardo Burgos, and Adrián Alós, chief technology officer, who together head Abexus Analytics, a data analysis firm that the young entrepreneurs founded nearly two years ago.
With the experience they have gained, they plan to “contribute to the island’s economy by creating and providing jobs.”
“If this isn’t something you dedicate a hundred percent to and you live off of that company that you’re trying to grow, it’ll be really difficult to start that company at any given moment. It will stay as a ‘hobby’,” added Alós.
“When you work for a company, you no longer work with a particular task and the capacity for personal development and the improvement of a skill is limited,” Burgos said.
“In our office, we’re like any other growing business. We have to be our own accountant, public relations consultant, analyst, the person that deals with clients, and the one who handles with the operations,” he added.
Meanwhile, Alós said one of the benefits is the ability to manage one’s own time. However, that management includes multitasking, which may take time away from the tasks that add more value to the company.
These challenges, which Burgos prefers to call “opportunities,” are many.
An example the young company faces in the industry — which is occupied by long-standing competitors — is creating a respectable brand through which people understand that what is behind it is a highly competent team with innovative technologies.
“In Puerto Rico, we tend to denigrate what we create locally, when sometimes we have capabilities that can compete anywhere around the world,” Burgos said.
Given the trials that Puerto Rico has faced in recent years, such as the ouster of former Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, the January 2020 earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic, inserting themselves in that industry has been difficult. The shortage of skilled human resources is also a setback.
“People with so much potential are leaving and retaining them is a considerable challenge for specific reasons,” Burgos said.
Meanwhile, he explained that being an entrepreneur is not only having a business or an idea. It’s about facing challenges day by day and overcoming them, while getting used to that mindset. Only in the process will the individual become a better person and entrepreneur.
“Nowadays I see people who go by the title of entrepreneur and that bothers me a little because for me, being an entrepreneur is about falling and getting up, how many times you can fall and get up, fall and get up…,” Burgos said.
“If this isn’t something you dedicate a hundred percent to and you live off of that company that you’re trying to grow, it’ll be really difficult to start that company at any given moment. It will stay as a ‘hobby’,” added Alós.
Burgos is a Social Sciences professor and Alós is an economist. Both became Abexus Analytics entrepreneurs when they found a passion for programming and analyzing data and discovered how limited the data infrastructure is in Puerto Rico.
In the future, they visualize Abexus Analytics as the first leading analytic company in the island.
